<파리의 한 장소를 소진시키려는 시도>는 휴대전화에 축적된 이미지와 그 이미지로부터 누락된 기억을 탐구하는 영상 작업이다. 촬영 시점과 맥락을 잃은 채 저장된 사진을 일종의 디지털 아카이브로 바라보고, 축적된 이미지를 다시 열람하고 기술하는 과정을 통해 이를 소진하려 한다.
작업은 조르주 페렉이 1974년 파리 생쉴피스 광장에 머물며 일상적으로 지나치는 사건과 대상을 기록한 방식을 참조한다. 그러나 눈앞의 장소를 관찰했던 페렉과 달리, 본인은 휴대전화 속 이미지의 내부를 가상의 공간으로 전환하여 그 안을 이동한다. 이미지에 기록된 정보뿐 아니라 프레임 밖으로 사라진 장면, 촬영 당시 기억하지 못했거나 이후 망각한 요소들을 상상하며 이미지의 경계를 확장한다.
이 과정에서 ‘이미지의 바깥’은 기록되지 않은 기억과 무의식, 그리고 사후적으로 구성된 허구가 교차하는 영역으로 나타난다. 작업은 저장과 삭제, 기억과 망각 사이에 놓인 디지털 이미지의 불안정성을 드러내며, 이미지를 소진한다는 행위가 완전한 제거가 아니라 기록의 빈틈을 반복해서 바라보고 기술하는 과정일 수 있음을 탐구한다.
<An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris> is a video work that explores images accumulated on a mobile phone and the memories omitted from them. Treating photographs stored without their original time or context as a form of digital archive, the work attempts to exhaust these accumulated images through a process of revisiting and describing them.
The work references Georges Perec’s method of recording the events and objects of everyday life while observing Place Saint-Sulpice in Paris in 1974. Unlike Perec, who observed a physical site before him, I transform the interior of images stored on my phone into imaginary spaces and move through them. By imagining not only the information contained within the images but also the scenes beyond their frames and the elements forgotten at the moment of capture or afterward, I extend the boundaries of the image.
In this process, the “outside of the image” emerges as a territory where unrecorded memory, the unconscious, and retrospectively constructed fiction intersect. The work reveals the instability of digital images suspended between storage and deletion, memory and forgetting, and explores how exhausting an image may be understood not as its complete elimination but as a repeated process of observing and describing the gaps within the record.
